Statistics show us that, at one time or another, you will likely need to have some sort of restorative dentistry treatment in your lifetime. That’s why it is good to come in on a regular basis and let us stay on top of what is going on in your mouth. You see, if we should ever come across any cavities or decay in your mouth, while you are here at our Quakertown, PA dentist’s office for a checkup, we can quickly employ a simple filling procedure to save your smile and to save your wallet from more costly procedures down the road.
Don’t worry; we only opt for root canals and extractions when it is too late for our more conservative treatments. Accordingly, discovering a cavity early enough to prevent further damage is the next best thing (to prevention) you can do for maintaining a healthy, happy smile. Keep reading to hear about our tooth-colored fillings, and then be sure to follow up with our team to schedule your next visit.
For quite some time, dentists have used a mix of mercury and other metals called amalgam for fillings. If you ever had a filling prior to the last few years, odds are that is what you got.
The effectiveness of these treatments has been shown to be high. Still, there have been some very real complaints about the metal itself. And for good reason.
To begin with, amalgam is anything but subtle, and so it looks like a dark blotch on your otherwise white teeth. Beyond that, old-fashioned fillings can actually make your tooth more vulnerable to fracture and cause damage to the nearby healthy tooth structures. Nobody wants that if they can take care of the problem another way!
That is precisely why, at our practice, we now use a new, safe, and aesthetically-pleasing material for fillings: composite.
Composite consists of a blend of resins that lends itself well to the appearance of your natural teeth. Unlike metal, they will look and feel like they actually belong in your mouth.
That means we can now fill a cavity very discreetly and the composite resin we use will also have superior bonding properties that allow for increased longevity.
There’s nothing to be afraid of, getting a tooth-colored filling from us is easy.
Here’s how it works: we will start out by numbing the relevant region of your mouth. And if you are anxious about the procedure, we can explore options for relaxing the rest of your body.
Then, we can clean the cavity by removing the decayed tissue. After the cavity has been cleared, we will apply the putty-like composite resin material in thin layers. We will be able to shape these layers to match the surface of your tooth.
Lastly, our team will harden the resin with a high-intensity light and polish it to match the shade of your teeth. That’s really all there is to it. Then you’ll be able to take your nice, clean mouth, and your refurbished smile with you when you leave.
