Tooth Bonding 101

You can think of dental bonding as sort of like sewing a sturdy patch onto a favorite pair of pants that have a hole in the knee — only more discreet than that. When you come in for a tooth bonding, we’ll first lightly etch the surface of your tooth so the bonding material will better adhere to your damaged tooth. Then, we’ll apply a tooth-colored resin to the area, concealing the imperfection.

After that, we’ll use a special light to cure or harden the resin, and we’ll make final adjustments so that it blends in seamlessly with the rest of your smile. That’s it! The process usually takes half an hour to an hour, and you’ll walk out of our office with a new and improved smile.

Tooth Bonding Vs. Dental Veneers

Dental bonding is often used to fix some of the same smile insecurities as dental veneers, which are thin, durable pieces of porcelain or composite that are crafted to look like the front of a tooth and placed to conceal damage.

Both tooth bonding and dental veneers are used to address:

  • Cracked or chipped teeth
  • Discoloration
  • Spaces between teeth
  • Short or misshapen teeth

But which treatment you choose depends on the severity of the problem. Generally speaking, tooth bonding is used for relatively minor damage. For more severe cases, we might recommend veneers.

It’s also important to note that tooth bonding isn’t as stain-resistant or long-lasting as a dental veneer when it comes to concealing damage. Bonding usually lasts up to 10 years before it needs to be replaced. Veneers, on the other hand, can last 15 years or longer with proper care.

The Cost Of Dental Bonding

Though dental bonding is one of the most affordable ways to repair a tooth, the price can vary depending on your specific case. It’s difficult to provide even a rough estimate here of how much your tooth bonding procedure would cost. If you’re interested, come in for a consultation. Dr. Roeder or Dr. Kulp will take a look at your tooth and be able to give you an idea of how much it’ll cost.

At Dream-Dentistry & Sleep Care, we make it easy to pay for high-quality dental care with convenient and flexible payment options. We accept most PPO plans, and we even work with CareCredit, a service which provides low- to no-interest financing for qualifying parties. We’ve also established our own in-house dental assistance savings plan, designed to give you discounts on many of the services we offer. You can learn more about that here.
