How Are Dental Implants Placed?
Let’s start with some basics. When you lose a tooth, you lose both the visible crown and the root, which is the structure that connects your tooth to the jaw bone. You could just replace the visible part of the missing tooth. But to get an artificial tooth that has all the security and durability of a natural one, you have to replace the root.
That’s where the dental implant comes it! A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made of titanium. That’s the same metal that’s commonly used for hip replacements, pacemakers, and other prosthetics and medical devices.
When you come to Dream-Dentistry & Sleep Care for dental implants, we’ll take some digital X-rays and assess the health of your teeth and jaw bone to see if dental implants are right for you. Once we establish that it’s a great fit, we’ll have you come back for the actual placement of the implants.
During this appointment, we’ll gently insert the artificial tooth root into the gums and jaw bone where the natural root used to be. Then, we’ll give it some time to heal. During this time, the jaw bone will actually fuse to the dental implant, exactly like it would a natural tooth.
Then, you’ll come back to have your dental implant restored. During this appointment, we’ll affix a dental restoration, such as a dental crown, to your dental implant. You’ll walk out with the gaps in your smile filled and a renewed sense of confidence!
Do Dental Implants Hurt?
This is one of the most common questions folks considering dental implants have. And though it might seem like the procedure would be painful, many people say it’s no more unpleasant than a routine tooth extraction. Some patients also say that numbing the area before we place the dental implants actually allows them to feel no discomfort at all.
Once the dental implants are placed, you might feel a mild soreness as the bone and tissue around your new prosthetic heal. But this is easily addressed with over-the-counter painkillers like Advil and Tylenol.
And after the area has fully healed and your dental implant has been restored, it will be so comfortable you’ll probably forget that it’s not a real tooth!
How Can I Have A More Comfortable Dental Implant Procedure?
We go the extra mile to ensure you’re completely comfortable with the placement of your dental implants. Our team actually meets once a week to brainstorm ways to improve patient comfort. Plus, we have a growing “comfort menu” that you can “order” from during your appointment.
- Soft blankets
- Warm neck wraps
- Video entertainment
- Stress relievers
- Warm facial wipes
- Lip balm
But to further reduce stress and discomfort, we can offer three forms of dental sedation. These medications alter the way you experience and remember your dental work, and they’re especially useful for relieving dental anxiety.
- Nitrous oxide. This fast-acting sedative is breathed through a small mask we place over your nose. It’ll help you feel calm and a mild sense of euphoria.
- Oral sedation. You’ll take a pill before your appointment. It’ll help you feel relaxed, perhaps slightly drowsy, and ready for your procedure.
- IV sedation. This form of sedation is administered directly into the bloodstream. You’ll experience your procedure as if you’re in a dream-like state, and you probably won’t remember much about it after it’s over.
