Bad Breath: Causes and Treatment

posted in: General Dental Care | 0

Halitosis, or most commonly known as bad breath, is an embarrassing condition. Everyone has experienced having bad breath at some point, but it is usually only after eating a pungent meal or after waking up in the morning. These types of bad breath can be easily fixed by observing proper oral hygiene. However, there are other instances that are trickier. As a result, people have it as a recurring issue that cannot be masked by just brushing, flossing, rinsing, and eating mints.

Do you think that the only cause of this condition is the poor practice of oral hygiene? Know that there are actually several factors that can cause a person to develop a foul-smelling breath. To know these, here is a list we at Dream-Dentistry & Sleep Care prepared!

Causes of Bad Breath

Tonsillitis

Bad breath is one of the indicators of having a sore throat. That is because the bacteria that cause the condition are the same ones that lead to bad breath.

Dehydration

A dry mouth allows food to stay in the mouth longer and bacteria to feed on it. This leads to the production of a foul smell in the mouth.

There is more to drinking water than just being good for the body, the practice is also mouth-friendly. Dentists encourage patients to drink plenty of water since not doing so creates an environment in the mouth that is favorable for bacteria.

Skipping meals

Saliva assists with proper digestion. It can also help wash off harmful bacteria that can lead to cavities and gum disease; both of which can cause the mouth to smell foul. Missing meals can lead to the insufficient production of saliva. As a result, a person becomes vulnerable to the attack of bacteria.

Coffee

As helpful as it is in making a person become alert in the mornings, drinking coffee can cause the mouth to become dry. As already mentioned previously, dry mouth can lead to bad breath. If coffee can’t be avoided, it is best for patients to follow it with a glass of water.

Too much consumption of protein

The downside of this diet is the by-product ammonia after breaking down into amino acid. Although the liver can convert ammonia to urea which can be eliminated in the form of urine, there are times that the liver can no longer handle the high levels produced. As a result, it is dispelled through sweat and breathing.

Bad Breath Treatment

At our practice, we begin treating halitosis by letting the patient undergo a diagnosis. It is performed with the help of a saliva test. By then, dentists can determine the cause of bad breath and the ideal procedures to perform for fresher breath like a thorough dental cleaning, dental exam, or gum disease treatment.
